Grieving the Future: What Never Got to Happen After Child Loss

Jun 18, 2026

Sometimes grief is not only about what happened.

It is also about everything that never had the chance to happen.

After the death of a child, parents do not only miss who their child was. They may also miss who their child might have become—the conversations never had, the moments never witnessed, and the ordinary future that never arrived.

This is one of the quieter layers of parental grief. It may surface years later, not because of a memory, but because something touches the life that could have unfolded.

In this episode of “Beyond the Loss: Life and Identity After a Child Dies”, I reflects on what it means to grieve forward—not as a way of staying trapped in what never happened, but as a way of gently acknowledging another part of the loss.

If this resonates, you are warmly invited to listen and reflect.
